Surveys and Mapping Division
Responsibilities
The Surveys and Mapping Division is a central service group to government and the public that is responsible for coordinating the provincial geomatics strategy and facilitating integration of geo-spatial data by providing standard services in: topographic mapping; geodesy; aerial photography; and geographical names.
Partnerships
- The Surveys and Mapping Division have been cost sharing the production of large scale topographic mapping for the last 5 years with Municipalities, utilities and other Government departments.
- Some examples of Municipalities that have cost shared are: Stephenville, Corner Brook, Springdale, Gander, Twillingate, Happy Valley - Goose Bay, Grand Falls - Windsor, and Placentia.
- NewTel Communications have cost shared extensively in 1:2500 scale mapping to support the GIS on their "out-side plant".
- The Surveys and Mapping Division has a long history of cost sharing with the Department of Transportation and Works.
- Typical cost sharing arrangements will have two or more partners at equal shares.

Clients
The primary clients include: federal and provincial departments; Crown corporations; municipalities; Canadian Coast Guard; Canadian Hydrographic Service; and mineral exploration companies; Additional clients include: engineers; planners; surveyors; consultants; non-profit organizations; educational institutions and the general public.
