What is the Geomatics Strategy?

The provincial geomatic strategy is a corporate direction with evolving polices that foster the following ideals:

  • Efficient sharing of geospatial referenced data;
  • Partnerships and cooperation;
  • Standards that ensure the alignment and connectivity of data;
  • Internet/Intranet data directories, access and visualization of data layers;
  • Standard base maps;
  • Collection and maintenance of data at the responsible source agency;
  • Eliminating duplication of effort; and:
  • Fostering public/private partnerships.

Objective of Geomatic Strategy

"To establish Newfoundland & Labrador as a leader in Geomatics by means of public/private partnerships to facilitate open access to georeferenced data, information, value-added data products and applications."

What does the term Geomatics mean?

Geomatics is an applied science which comprises the acquisition, analysis, management and distribution of spatially referenced information. Geomatics includes such activities as surveying, topographic mapping, marine charting, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS).

Background Highlights

  • The Surveys and Mapping Division in the Lands Branch of the Department of Government Services and Lands has been building the foundation of geomatics (the geodetic reference system and base maps) for over 25 years.
  • During the 1990's most of the base mapping was converted to digital format, and many GIS applications have evolved in government departments, based on the standard geodetic system and base maps.
  • In 1997, government approved- in-principle a Geomatic Strategy and established a Steering Committee co-chaired by government and industry to develop an implementation plan.
  • The Lands Branch has been designated lead agency responsibility for geomatics and collaborates with the Federal/Provincial/Territorial GeoConnections program towards building the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI).

Current Geomatic Projects in the Lands Branch

  • Conversion and standardization of base maps
  • Digital community mapping (new and revision)
  • 1:10,000 scale orthophoto resource mapping (pilot project)
  • Conversion of Crown Titles graphic and attribute data to GIS
  • Conversion of Land Use Atlas graphic and attribute data to GIS
  • Participation in a Canada Wide Differential GPS corrections system
  • Building a high precision GPS reference network
  • Participation in the delivery of Landsat7 satellite imagery
  • Web mapping applications for data discovery, data sales and distribution
  • Enhancement of administrative boundaries featuring data collection and management at the source agency with data sharing.
  • Establishing multi-server geospatial data connecting and sharing.
