There are two pieces of legislation which govern the operations of the Surveys and Mapping Division: the Lands Act and the Geographical Names Board Act.

The Lands Act authorizes surveyors entry onto all lands within the province for the purpose of installing control survey markers. The Surveys and Mapping Division has established approximately 7000 permanent survey markers across the province. The Geographical Names Board Act gives this Department the authority to officially name all geographical features and places in the province.
