Introduction
The Newfoundland and Labrador wallmap series as produced by the Surveys and Mapping Division is being revised. The series includes map sheets of Newfoundland, Labrador, and the entire province. The current series was first printed in 1988, based on data from 1:500,000 scale federal maps. A new map design is underway for printing in late 2006. The 1988 maps were created in digital format, but the structure of the data is primitative by current standards. The new maps will be maintained in a more usable database structure to support GIS applications and web mapping services. The division is planning to produce PDF versions of the wallmap series at various scales that will be freely available to the public on the Internet.
Objectives
The objectives of the project are to:
-
Revise and print the current series of three wallmaps (Newfoundland, Labrador and a combined map);
-
Maintain the wallmap data in a GIS database that will be accessible by the public; and
-
Provide a series of PDF files suitable for public use at different scales.
Consultation
By consultation with government departments, agencies and public users, the wallmap revision project aims to determine:
-
What are the contents most important to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador?
-
What kind of cartographic visualization is the most efficient in conveying geospatial information to the public?
-
How to build a more reliable and logical geospatial database, which will be easily to maintain and update in the future?
