Projects - Stella Burry Community Energy Efficiency Upgrades for Supportive and Affordable Housing
Location: St. John’s
Funding Amount: $400,000
Sector: Buildings
Current Status: Nearing completion
Estimate GHG reduction Potential: 49 tonnes of GHG (CO2 equivalents) per year
Project Summary:
Stella Burry Community Services (SBCS) provides affordable and supportive housing, employment and education related support services to vulnerable populations in St. John’s. SBCS has acquired the former drugstore building on 135 Military Road and the adjoining premises on 84-86 Prescott Street. They are in the process of redeveloping the site to provide 19 supportive, subsidized rental units. It is an incorporated body of the United Church of Canada and is a charitable non-profit organization. They are involved in the St. John’s Community Plan for Addressing Homelessness, a multi-stakeholder initiative under Canada’s Homelessness Partnering Strategy.
The project will incorporate extensive energy performance upgrades to significantly decrease energy costs and GHG emissions. The project will involve installation of additional insulation, high performance windows, a heat pump system and control systems. The upgrades will reduce GHG emissions by 49 tonnes per year, or 54% from 90.12 to 40.8t per year. Energy cost will go from $12,700/year to $7670/year.
