Caribou Health Monitoring Program

In 2006, the Wildlife Division initiated a three-year program to evaluate the condition of Woodland Caribou on the Island of Newfoundland. The program is part of a larger caribou management initiative to understand the reasons behind the island's current caribou population decline.

Successful caribou hunters were asked to submit information about their hunt and samples from their caribou. Completed sample packages included an information sheet, left kidney, right rear lower leg and the tagged jawbone. All samples were frozen and stored at the Wildlife Lab in Corner Brook for analysis.
