Lake Chub
Couesius plumbeus

Status
Occurs in Labrador.

Food
The major part of their diet is made up of aquatic insects.

Range
Found in all Provinces of Canada. In NF it is found in Labrador.

Appearance
The lake chub is a minnow that can grow up to about 9" in length. Brown to green above with a dark stripe along silver-gray sides. Slender body with pointed snout.

Breeding Biology
Very few studies have been published on this species. The lake chub usually undergoes a spawning migration from lake to tributary stream in the early spring. When water temperatures are roughly 140C spawning begins to take place. They will spawn amongst rocky substrate. Eggs are neither placed in a nest or guarded. It is estimated that a female 2.8 inches long can hold 500 eggs.
