Mottled Sculpin
Cottus bairdi

Status
The mottled sculpin is only found in the northerly portion of Labrador.

Habitat
In general the animal prefers cool, calm waters of lakes and streams.

Range
Found in Central/ Eastern Canada as far west as Manitoba. In NF it is found in Labrador.

Food
It is a benthic (bottom) feeder, subsisting on aquatic insect larva.

Breeding Biology
Unfortunately there are few detailed reports on the spawning behaviour or general behaviours. Spawning occurs probably in May, although this will vary in accordance with geographic location. The male, during the spawning period, becomes dark headed, selects a spawning site under a ledge or rock. There is a courtship behaviour, the female enters the nest and deposits her eggs. The male remains to guard the nest and circulates current over the eggs by fanning his pectoral fins. Spawning may occur when water temperature reaches 100C.
