Activities
The main activity that occurs in the reserve is hiking out to see the fossils-by scientists and the public. An entry permit is not required.
The trail is easy to follow. Park at the edge of the dirt road, and follow the track across the barrens 45 minutes to the coast.
There are a number of identified hiking trails that leave the Cape Race Lighthouse road, namely Freshwater Cove, Bob's Cove, Bristy Cove, and Mistaken Point/Watern Cove Trails. Most of these trails are used for berry picking, hunting, and sightseeing. The Mistaken Point/Watern Cove Trail is the preferred trail for fossil seekers. This route, which leads directly to the internationally significant Mistaken Point fossil assemblage, is a well defined track that once led to a summer fishing community at Watern Cove. Remnant rock-pile foundations can still be found in the area. Reserve users are cautioned that the Watern Cove River can pose an obstacle, however it is passable depending on your choice of footwear and the water levels. Beyond the river it is only a short distance on a beaten path to the fossil assemblage.
Visitors making the trip are advised to:
- dress for open-country hiking-there is a high probability you will encounter cool wind and fog
- carry a compass
- exercise caution near and on the coastal rocks-they can be slippery
- read and abide by the Rules & Regulations before visiting
Guided tours to the fossils are available from the Visitor Orientation Centre in the small community of Portugal Cove South. To inquire ahead, call (709) 438-1100.
Hunting and fishing are permitted in the reserve, in the appropriate seasons and with valid licences.
